Dining Etiquette for Creating Inclusive and Hearing-Friendly Environments [Infographic]

Here are a few tips on dining etiquette with hearing loss for your next food adventure.

This list of dining etiquette for creating inclusive and hearing-friendly events is to keep you mindful of activities or requests that can make your event enjoyable for everyone.

Dining together is a wonderful opportunity to connect, share stories, and enjoy good food. When dining with a person with hearing loss, there are a few simple ways to ensure the meal is enjoyable for everyone. Adopting hearing-friendly etiquette helps create a more inclusive environment where everyone feels welcome and valued.

Thoughtful Seating Arrangements

When planning your seating, prioritize arrangements that allow clear visibility of everyone at the table. Circular or semi-circular layouts work best, as they allow individuals with hearing loss to see faces clearly and pick up visual cues. Avoid placing anyone in a position where their view of the group is obstructed. Circular arrangements help facilitate conversation for everyone and keep people included in dialog.

Optimize Lighting Conditions

Adequate lighting is essential for effective communication. Make sure the dining area is well-lit without harsh backlighting, which can create shadows and make it harder to read lips or see facial expressions. Natural light or soft, evenly distributed lighting improves visibility and comfort. When in a restaurant, request a table that suits an appropriate lighting and noise level, or if hosting an event, make sure the ambiance is fitting for everyone involved.

Minimize Background Noise

Restaurants or bustling dining areas can sometimes be overwhelming due to excessive background noise. Opt for quieter venues or request a table away from loudspeakers, kitchens, or crowded zones. At home, consider playing soft, instrumental music instead of loud or overlapping sounds to keep the atmosphere calm and inviting, or remove background noise entirely. It’s also appropriate to ask your guests about their preferences and what would make them most comfortable.

Clear Communication

When speaking, ensure your mouth is visible and avoid covering it with hands, napkins, or utensils. Speak naturally and at a moderate pace, as exaggerating speech can make lip-reading more difficult. Pausing between thoughts allows everyone to stay engaged in the conversation.

Encourage Inclusive Conversations

A good host helps actively involve everyone in the discussion. Gently guide conversations to ensure topics don’t jump too quickly or exclude anyone, including individuals with hearing loss. Making eye contact and checking in to confirm understanding helps foster a more inclusive dialogue.

Use Accessible Tools and Technology

Technology can greatly enhance communication during meals. If you’re dining with someone who uses an assistive listening device like hearing aids, ask if they have specific preferences. Many modern hearing devices can connect to phones or apps for clearer sound in noisy environments. Captions or transcription apps are also helpful for real-time conversations.

Show Patience and Respect

When anyone asks for clarification, take the time to repeat or rephrase without frustration. Avoid dismissive phrases like “It’s nothing” or “I’ll explain later,” as these types of comments may make others feel left out. A little patience goes a long way in creating a welcoming environment for everyone.

Learn Basic Sign Language

If your guest uses American Sign Language (ASL), learning a few basic signs can be a meaningful way to bridge communication gaps and promote inclusivity. Simple phrases like “thank you,” “please,” or “How are you?” can make dining experiences more interactive and enjoyable for individuals who use ASL.
