A CapTel telephone is a fantastic way for a person with hearing loss to place and receive phone calls with confidence.

Getting a CapTel telephone is a big step forward if you have hearing loss. With a captioned telephone, you’ll be able to confidently communicate with friends and family, schedule appointments, and enjoy your independence over the phone.

Whether you’re considering getting a CapTel phone or have recently acquired one, or if you’re thinking about purchasing one for a friend or family member, we’re happy to address questions you might have about getting started.

In this guide, we’ll answer frequently asked questions for new CapTel telephone users so you can be prepared to hit the ground running!

1. How do CapTel phones work?

CapTel phones work just like any other phone — but also show captions that you can read along with. When you make or receive a call, your phone will automatically connect with a no-cost captioning service. As you speak to one another, what the person on the other end of the line says is converted into text either by automatic captions or by a captioning assistant, depending on how you have your phone set up. You can read the captions on the phone’s display, allowing you to follow the conversation more easily.

2. Are CapTel phones compatible with hearing aids?

CapTel phones are designed to be fully hearing aid-compatible. They have a built-in induction loop, which will transmit sound directly to the telecoil in your hearing aid. That way, you can rely on a mix of sound and captions to have the best of both worlds.

3. How much does a CapTel phone cost?

If you have hearing loss, CapTel phones are available to you at no cost. The captioning service is provided at no charge to people with hearing loss, through a federally-funded program designed to make telecommunications access available to all. In addition, several states have specialized equipment programs that offer CapTel phones at no expense. You may opt to purchase a CapTel phone directly, the price of each CapTel model is $75.

4. Do I need an internet connection in my home for the phone to work?

While most CapTel phone models require an internet connection, users without internet access can use the CapTel 840PLUS model with traditional analog telephone lines.

5. Are there different models of CapTel phones?

Yes, CapTel offers a variety of phone models to suit different preferences and needs. Some models have larger displays for easier reading, while others have additional features like a touch screen. Explore the options available to find a CapTel phone that best meets your preferences.

6. Can I use a CapTel phone for emergency calls?

It’s a good idea to make an emergency response plan before one happens, and do your best to stick to it if the need arises. Learn more about dialing 911 with a CapTel phone.

8. Can I use a CapTel phone outside of my home?

CapTel phones are landline-style telephones designed for home use, so you can’t take them on the go like a cell phone. However, there is a mobile app available that provides captioning service for your mobile device, allowing users to have captioned conversations on the go.

9. Are CapTel phones available for different languages?

CapTel currently supports captions in English to English and Spanish to Spanish (it does not translate from one language to the other). You can select which language you want in the settings menu. If you have the CapTel 2400i model, you can even switch languages during your call.

10. How do I set up voicemail on my CapTel phone?

Whether you use the built-in CapTel answering machine or a voicemail service provided by your telephone company, it is easy to get captions on messages left for you. Setting up the answering machine or voicemail on a CapTel phone is a straightforward process, but it depends on what model you have. The user guide that comes with your phone provides step-by-step instructions.

11. Can I use CapTel phones for conference calls?

Yes, you can use a CapTel phone to dial into a conference call, just like a standard phone! You can even use them to join a Zoom or other video call. Having captions for your conference calls will help you follow the discussion, participate more easily, and even review captions after the call to refresh your memory of what was said.
