Orlando, FL

If you’re traveling with kids or love a good thrill ride, Orlando, FL and its many theme parks make great hearing loss-friendly travel destinations!

Disney World has taken steps to make its parks more accessible for visitors with hearing loss, including renting assistive listening devices that make it easier to hear announcements, shows, etc., from their Guest Services department. They also have a number of sign language interpreters on staff for shows, parades, and character meet-and-greets — just be sure to book them in advance through Disney’s Disability Services department.

At Universal Orlando Resort, accommodations for guests with hearing loss include American Sign Language interpretation for select live-action shows, and open captioning on select attractions.

Washington, D.C.

A hearing-loss-friendly trip to Washington, D.C., can be an ideal option for history buffs, with lots of historic sites, monuments, and museums to explore. Consider visiting museums that offer closed captioning, sign language interpretation, or audio description, such as the Smithsonian National Museum of American History or the National Museum of Natural History.

Check out attractions with visual cues, like the National Mall’s monuments and memorials or the cherry blossom festival. Plan your stay at an accessible hotel that offers options like a visual fire alarm or a bed shaker.

Italy

From the Colosseum in Rome to the canals of Venice and the stunning beaches of the Amalfi Coast, Italy is a must-see destination! Consider learning some basic Italian Sign Language (LIS) phrases and bring a card with information about your hearing loss to show in case of emergencies. One popular attraction is the ancient ruins of Pompeii, where visitors can walk through the preserved city and learn about life in ancient Rome — some tours will offer headsets or written notes so you can follow along.

For those who enjoy the outdoors, plan to hike in the Tuscan countryside or take a boat tour. Of course, Italy is also known for its delicious cuisine, so it’s perfect for foodies with hearing loss!

U.S. National Parks

For nature lovers looking to explore the great outdoors, national parks are an excellent choice. National parks typically have a variety of hearing loss-friendly activities, such as ranger-led tours and accessible trails. Utilize National Park Service brochures and websites to plan ahead and learn about attractions with closed captioning, sign language interpretation, or audio description. Communicate your needs and preferences to park staff in advance to get their advice and ensure an enjoyable trip.
