Fit activity into your busy schedule with these suggestions.
Staying active with a physical activity you enjoy is a key part of a healthy lifestyle. But that can get a bit tricky over the holidays when your schedule gets busy, friends and family might be in town, or your holiday shopping takes up all your free time!
There are still plenty of ways to stay physically active over the holiday season and fit in some movement whenever you can. Check out these ideas, including making your workout a family activity, creating new holiday traditions, and multi-tasking!
As with any new fitness routine, please check with your doctor before trying any of these activities for the first time.
Fit in a quick walk or workout in the morning
Walking is a very effective way to get your heart rate up, and doing so in the morning can be a great way to start off your day strong. There are also other quick workouts you can get in before your day gets going, like yoga, body-weight strength exercises, and more. By doing your activity in the morning, you have the rest of the day to visit, bake, shop, or relax. Doing your activity in the morning can also kick-start your day and help boost your energy!
Make it a family activity
Get the whole family involved in staying physically active over the holiday season! Perhaps your kids or grandkids would like to walk to a nearby park, go for a bike ride, or have a dance party to get active. It’s easier to get that activity into your day when you can include others and make it a group event!
Bring resistance bands when traveling
A simple way to fit in a workout when you’re on the road is to bring along resistance bands. Resistance bands are compact, easy to take and use anywhere, and very effective when paired with a total body resistance band workout. Like with any workout you find, you can always skip any moves that don’t work for you or modify them to work best for your abilities.
Walk while you shop
If you can, based on your location and comfort level, do some shopping in person, even if it is just window shopping. Especially in a shopping mall setting, walking from store to store can be a fantastic workout! You can even take extra laps around the mall or take a long route to your next store. You might even find yourself off the beaten path and come across some great gift ideas for your friends and family!
Start a new holiday tradition
Another great way to stay physically active during the holiday season is to make a winter sport a new holiday tradition with friends or family. Activities like ice skating, sledding, cross-country skiing, and more can be fun ways to get active with others and spend quality time together. Turning it into a tradition with family will make it even more fun!
