Raise awareness of hearing health
For many people, hearing isn’t something they actively think about until they begin experiencing hearing loss. Hearing loss events aim to raise awareness about hearing loss, share information about how to protect and care for your hearing, help people communicate with people in their lives who experience hearing loss, and more.
Support hearing health organizations
The HLAA Walk4Hearing is a non-profit event that supports so many wonderful hearing health organizations around the country. Since its inception in 2006 through the present day, the walks have raised over $17 million for more than 2,000 local nonprofits and state organizations. These funds are dedicated to things like:
- Providing scholarships for students with hearing loss
- Financially assisting people with hearing aids, audiologist appointments, etc.
- Supporting early intervention and educational initiatives
- Funding research into hearing loss and speech therapy
- Establishing hearing accessibility technology in public places
- And much more!
When you participate in this hearing loss event, you can be confident that all of the funds you raise will go to a great cause.
Learn about resources and technologies
Walk4Hearing events are a great way to meet knowledgeable experts and get more informed on the latest hearing technology. If you’re not sure what hearing support options are available to you locally, or are interested in the newest hearing loss tech, you’ll probably find someone who knows about it or can provide you with information. Joining your local HLAA chapter is also a great way to tap into a network of knowledge!
Enjoy fresh air and exercise
All HLAA Walk4Hearing events take place in either late spring (May and June) or early fall (September to early November). The events will take place rain or shine, so be sure to plan accordingly! Plus, walking has so many benefits for our physical and mental health.
Connect with your local community
Since people with hearing loss have different communication needs, it’s often refreshing and inspiring to connect with other people who understand the challenges they face. Attending a Walk4Hearing is a perfect way to find new friends in your community.
Official HLAA Walk4Hearing events take place in twenty cities across the US. View all the locations and dates here. If you aren’t close enough to attend, you can organize your own informal walk and spread the word to your local community! HLAA suggests registering with any location to coordinate fundraising and doing the actual walk anywhere in your neighborhood.
