Use this easy step-by-step guide to enable subtitles on your iPhone or Android.
An increasing number of people are using their smartphones every day to stream media. In fact, according to a recent survey, 57% of U.S. smartphone users access video content at least once a month, and about a quarter do so every day. If you enjoy watching news clips, silly cat videos on YouTube, Facebook videos of your grandchildren, or any other media while on-the-go, but have some trouble hearing the audio, this quick and easy guide will help you learn how to turn on captions on your smartphone.
To enable captions on your iPhone:
- Open Settings
- Tap General, then Accessibility
- Scroll to the Media category and select Subtitles & Captioning
- Turn on Closed Captions + SDH
You can also customize the size, font, background, and color of your captions from within the Subtitles & Captioning menu by selecting Style.
To enable captions on your Android device:
- Open Settings
- Tap Accessibility (from here you may have to choose a category, i.e. Hearing)
- Tap the On/Off switch for Captions (or Subtitles, depending on your device)
In the Captions/Subtitles menu, you may also have the option of turning off all sounds on your device, even if the sound mode is set to Sound. From the same menu, you can also select the language you want your captions to appear in, the text size, and even the style and color.
