New local Communications Center makes it possible for people with hearing loss to communicate over the phone.

October 6, 2016 – Appleton, WI – In response to growing demand for its captioning service, Wisconsin-based CapTel®, Inc., has officially opened a new state-of-the-art communications center at 4351 West College Avenue in Appleton. The new center provides Captioned Telephone service for people nationwide who are deaf or hard of hearing, enabling them to communicate
over the phone.
The captioning service shows word-for-word captions during phone conversations, similar to closed captions on TV. People who cannot hear over the phone can read the captions to know what is being said. The service is free to people with hearing loss under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). It is estimated that 23 million Americans have difficulty hearing.
“I used to dread when the phone rang, because I knew I wasn’t going to be able to hear,” explains Russell, a CapTel user in the Fox Valley area. “With the captioning service, I don’t shy away from the phone anymore. What I can’t hear fonts, I can read. It makes a world of difference talking on the phone.”
