Great senior-friendly apps

Studies show that seniors are becoming very savvy in keeping up to date and utilizing the latest technology. According to PewResearch, the number of older adults using new technology has continued to steadily increase over the years. In fact, 77 percent of seniors aged 65 or older are using cell phones, 59 percent are using the Internet and 47 percent have broadband access. Internet usage with older adults has blossomed more than 45 percent over the past 15 years, and reports continue to indicate that more seniors are adapting to the latest gadgets and electronics. For those keeping up with the latest trends in technology, here are some of the more senior-friendly apps available for smartphones, tablets and laptops:

Socializing
With so many social networking sites and apps designed to stay in touch with family and friends, staying connected has never been easier. While the main socializing sites such as Facebook and Skype are free and easy to use, there are a number of other apps specifically geared for seniors that can help you stay close to loved ones who live far away. Postcards is a free app that allows users to view or send photos and videos with the click of a few buttons, and requires little to no computer experience to enjoy. Google Voice is also a simple way to record vocal messages and send them to your friends. Wireless CapTel apps from Sprint and Hamilton allow you to see captions during your phone calls with friends and family, helping you to catch every word they say.

Health
Several new smartphone apps are designed to help monitor and manage common health concerns. For instance, HeartWise Blood Pressure Tracker is an app that can calculate and measure your blood pressure, heart rate and weight, and has also been voted as the No. 1 Medical App for the iPhone. Motion Doctor is another app that provides various health benefits by teaching tools and techniques to help combat painful symptoms at home, and doesn’t even require an internet connection once the software has been downloaded and installed. In addition, Motion Doctor offers coordinating stretches and exercises to help you avoid discomfort during your favorite activities, such as golf or gardening, helping to maintain senior independence.

Memory
With everyone’s busy schedule, it’s practically inevitable that something may slip your mind or get lost in the shuffle. There are plenty of apps that offer ways to help remember everyday tasks, such as Pageonce, which helps you monitor your bills and payments and notifies you when money is due or you’re close to overdrafting from your account. Forget where you parked your car? Park’n’Forget helps you store which floor or section you left your car in and also sound an alarm when you’re approaching the maximum time for your parking meter. If you can’t remember where you set down your phone or tablet, Find My iPad is a free app that helps you locate your missing technology in no time by signing on iCloud and using GPS tracking to find your device.

Recreation
Are you looking to play a game with your friend who lives all the way across the country? Words With Friends is an excellent source for recreation that mirrors the classic Scrabble board game and allows you to not only engage, but interact with your friends while participating in friendly competition. Want to read the latest book by your favorite author? Using iBooks will provide you with instant access to download everything from classic novels to the latest magazine issue of your choice.

These are just some of the latest apps that seniors report finding helpful or entertaining, without a lot of computer experience needed.  There are many more out there.  Take some time to explore and read reviews on apps that look interesting to you.
