HLAA Convention 2014 overview

This year will mark another rendition of the annual Hearing Loss Association of America’s 29th annual Convention, and it is shaping up to be an action-packed schedule in the Live Country Music Capital of the World. For the 48 million people in America who are affected by hearing loss, the HLAA Convention 2014 will provide attendees with the latest information regarding state-of-the-art technology, informative hands-on workshops and plenty of opportunities to enjoy scrumptious Texas BBQ and get down to live music. The Convention will be held at the Renaissance Austin June 26-29, and is a perfect event for anyone with hearing loss as well as their friends, family and professionals in the field.

Tons of demonstrations
There will be lots of opportunities to see firsthand all of the revolutionary news and action that is currently taking place in the world of hearing loss. More than 40 communication-accessible workshops will be set up within the confines of the convention, each showcasing distinct topics ranging from advocacy in the workplace to the wonders of cochlear implants to how to efficiently spread awareness. Workshop leaders include a number of audiologists as well as prominent members of the various HLAA Chapters and State Associations.

Start socializing
The HLAA Convention is an excellent place for those with hearing loss to meet with one another and share their enthusiasm to learn how to live successfully with hearing loss. Each evening of the Convention will feature its own special event, which include the following:

  • June 26 – A Get Acquainted Party to kick off the festivities.
  • June 27 – Texas Swing ceremony at the iconic Schloz Beer Garden, featuring catered barbecue, live music by the Hot Texas Swing Band and chances to win prizes such as two plane tickets courtesy of American Airlines.
  • June 28 – Fiesta Banquet featuring comedienne and hearing loss advocate Gael Hannan and music by Austinite Kenny Luna.
  • June 29 – An Awards Breakfast and Ceremony sponsored by CapTel Captioned Telephone.

The events are a great way to introduce guests to one another and start networking for spreading hearing loss awareness.

Keynote speaker
The keynote address will be provided by famed composer and hearing loss advocate Richard Einhorn. A classically trained composer who studied at Columbia University, Einhorn has produced critically acclaimed work in various artistic genres, including film scores, opera orchestration and musical accompaniment for ballets. In 2010, Einhorn suddenly lost most of his hearing overnight, and instead of succumbing to his condition, he has continued to produce a number of well-received works while also spreading awareness of hearing loss. His speech will touch on many subjects regarding hearing loss, particularly his personal experiences, how he has managed his auditory state and how to draw the attention of others to this worldwide issue.

The HLAA Convention 2014 is a great way to learn about all of the new technologies and strategies for coping with hearing loss, and is highly recommended for those interested in learning more about hearing loss advocacy. Don’t forget to stop by CapTel’s booth (312/314) to see our latest technology!
