Delicious and healthy snacks, even if you’re on a diet

People often associate snacking with a poor diet, but in fact, there is research showing that some people feel better when they eat several small meals throughout the day. It’s not a great idea to eat snacks high in fat, sugar or simple carbohydrates because, rather than giving you fuel for the rest of your day, these can actually make you feel tired and bloated. Here are some healthy and delicious snacks that you can try to tide you over until dinner time:

  • Rather than eating potato chips, considering making healthier options with other veggies in your oven at home. You can make kale, sweet potato or even beet chips by lightly salting the fresh leaves or slices and popping them in the oven for about 30 minutes.
  • Popcorn is another great snack because it contains a lot of fiber and can be pretty filling. Avoid the overly salted or unnatural buttered varieties for a healthy option.
  • If you’re craving something sweet, you can make homemade baked apples. Just peel and slice an apple or two, put it in a oven-safe dish, sprinkle it with nutmeg and cinnamon and put it in the oven or microwave for soft and delightful smelling (and tasting) apples.
  • Hummus makes a quick, easy and healthy snack. It is usually fat free, tasty and comes in varieties like roasted garlic or red pepper. Slice vegetables to dip in it.
  • A handful of nuts or trail mix made with nuts, seeds and dried fruit will give you a nice boost of protein and provide omega-3s, which are good for heart health.
  • Another excellent snack can be made my combining mashed avocado and fat free Greek yogurt to make an airy, tasty dip for veggies or whole grain crackers.
