City spotlight: Visiting sunny Los Angeles

Sunny Los Angeles is wonderful place to take a relaxing, escape-from-it all vacation. Los Angeles is a unique locale where you can take in a Lakers or Dodgers game, explore impressive art galleries or see a live performance at one of the most prestigious theaters in the country – after all, it probably has one of the highest concentrations of celebrities and performers in the entire country, and maybe the world. And because of these outstanding attractions and amenities, the City of Angels is one of the most accommodating to people with hearing loss. So pack your bags and get ready to walk among the stars.

When you plan your visit, make sure to see the iconic Hollywood sign, visit the Hollywood Walk of Fame, explore historic Olvera Street, take a stroll on the nearby Santa Monica Pier and do some celebrity-sighting and dining on the famous Rodeo Drive. There really is too much to do in Los Angeles, but here are some other excellent attractions that everyone can enjoy:

Catch a Game at the Staples Center
The massive Staples Center is the place in L.A. for the serious sports fans. Depending on the season, you can catch an L.A. Lakers, Clippers or Sparks game, an L.A. Kings Game or several different minor league games here. For visitors with hearing loss, the Staples Center is very accommodating. Go to the M12 gate on the main concourse to get an assistive listening device, or call about two weeks in advance to request a sign language interpreter. The Center has also partnered with Caption Colorado to provide captioning for all important public address system announcements in the stadium.

If you’re more interested in concerts or other events, the Staples Center hosts these as well – check the schedule and buy tickets online before you go!

Visit The Getty Center
Art-lovers will not want to miss the amazing collection at The Getty Center. It houses an excellent permanent collection, including works by van Gogh, Monet and Munch, as well as several renowned traveling collections. The Getty offers several hearing loss solutions for art enthusiasts who are hard of hearing, including assistive listening devices for use in the Orientation Theater, the lecture hall and events in the Harold M. Williams Auditorium; closed captioning in the Orientation Theater and sign language interpreters – just request someone at least 10 days in advance!

Hollywood Pantages Theater
A trip to Los Angeles would not be complete without live theater. Visit the Art Deco-inspired Hollywood Pantages Theater to see the best Broadway performances on the west coast. You can be enthralled by classics like Evita, The Wizard of Oz and Disney’s The Lion King, or see more recent highly acclaimed shows like Once and The Book of Mormon. Hollywood Pantages offers both ASL-interpreted and open caption shows. Before your visit, fill out an online form to inform them if you require either of these options or call if you prefer. At every performance, comfortable headsets are available that help to amplify the sound, making the performance more enjoyable for you.

These are just a few of the excellent options that Los Angeles has to offer for those living with hearing loss to make your trip truly wonderful.
